Radiographic Testing and Interpretation (RT/RI)

Many industries use Radiographic Testing and Interpretation as an inspection method to reveal internal flaws or specific features of assemblies. This method employs either film or digital systems and covers a wide range of materials, including steels, alloys, and composites.

This course is available on both SNT and PCN schemes.

Level 2

Course Overview

Radiographic Testing (RT), also known as Radiography, is a commonly used non-destructive testing (NDT) method to examine the internal structure of a material or component. This course has been designed for personnel responsible for the testing and interpretation of radiographs or digital images with the aim of having permanent records of the structure.

Radiographic Testing involves passing X-rays or gamma rays through the object being inspected to create a radiographic image on a film or digital detector. The resulting radiographic image can reveal defects, voids, cracks, inclusions, and other internal features that may not be visible from the surface.

Course Objectives

Within certification, Level 2 personnel may be authorised and qualified by the employer to:

  • Select the technique required to carry out the test method i.e. gamma or x-ray
  • Determine the limitations of its application
  • Interpret codes, standards and procedures to identify their application
  • Prepare equipment and settings
  • Evaluate radiation risk assessments
  • Apply safe working practices in accordance with legislation
  • Perform the inspection tasks
  • Interpret and evaluate the results of the inspection
  • Complete and endorse inspection reports and records
  • Supervise all tasks carried out by personnel at Level 1 or Level 2

Below is an overview of the standard course, which includes but is not limited to:

  • Basic radiation safety
  • Properties of X-ray and Gamma rays
  • Basic physics/atomics
  • Absorption and scattering effects
  • Radiographic equipment (gamma and x-ray)
