Level 2

Course Overview

Eddy Current Inspection relies on the principles of electromagnetic induction to detect changes in the electrical conductivity or magnetic permeability of the material being inspected. Eddy current testing is particularly effective for inspecting materials that are electrically conductive, such as metals.

Our course is designed for personnel who are responsible for the application of eddy current testing methods for the detection of flaws on metallic materials and welded structures. It is predominantly set against the petrochemical industry for upstream and downstream facilities such as offshore structures, shipping and onshore processing plant including components on lifting and fabrication.

Course Objectives

Personnel certified to Eddy Current Inspection Level 2 will have demonstrated an understanding of the subject and a level of confidence to perform Eddy Current Inspection in accordance with NDT procedures.

Within certification, Level 2 personnel may be authorised and qualified by the employer to:

  • Select the technique required to carry out the test method
  • Determine the limitations of its application
  • Interpret codes, standards and procedures to identify their application
  • Prepare equipment and settings against reference standard blocks
  • Perform the inspection tasks
  • Interpret and evaluate the results of the inspection
  • Complete and endorse inspection reports and records
  • Supervise all tasks carried out by personnel at Level 1 or Level 2

Course Content

Below is an overview of the standard course, which includes but is not limited to:

  • Visual inspection requirements
  • Certification and qualification
  • Limitations and Advantages of Eddy Current Testing
  • Terms and definitions used in NDT
  • Electrical properties and circuits
  • Principles of magnetism and electromagnetism
  • Eddy Current equipment testing, calibration and function
  • Understanding procedures, codes and standards. The preparation of instruction writing
  • Application of the Eddy Current Testing Methods and relevant techniques

Course Information

Certification

  • Attendance of training certificate
  • SNT Level 2 or;
  • PCN Level 2 certificate, issued by BINDT directly.

Duration

Level 2 is available to those candidates who have already obtained Level 1, if you hold PCN Level 1 your training and examination duration will be 5 days (please contact the ATL centre for dates/costs)

Direct entry combines both Level 1 and Level 2 courses, This course has two options:

  • PCN Level 2 training and examination is 10 days.
  • SNT Level 2 training and examination is 10 days.

The course duration is based on the full BINDT PCN course. SNT courses can be tailored to suit company requirements.

Please note: Attendees will be assigned homework modules to complete in the evenings of each course day. These modules are included as part of the total training hours

Pre-Requisites

If you are new to NDT/this is your first NDT course, register for the BINDT Online Product Technology course, book: Product Technology Online Training

From the 1st of November 2025, you will be required to complete this  online course before attending your first NDT course and you will be required to attach your Product Technology Certificate while booking in.

EXPERIENCE:

In order to receive a Level 2 qualification, before or after the NDT course the attendee will need to provide(maximum allowable hours in 1 day is 12 hours):

  • Holds Level 1:   135 days experience
  • Direct Entry:     180 days experience

RECOMMENDATION: Although this NDT course allows direct entry to Level 2, we recommend that participants have some prior knowledge of the NDT method/sector, either through work experience, online research or by studying the course notes. Course notes cover all elements required for NDT examination. You may request collection of course notes after your booking is secure.
