Advanced Radiation Safety (ARS)
Advanced Radiation Safety (ARS) gives you a deeper understanding of the safety requirements associated with the use of x-ray and gamma-ray sources within workplace environments.
This course is available on both SNT and PCN schemes.
Level 2
Course Overview
This course is designed for industrial radiographers or personnel working within radiography or in an environment where radiation is present. It has been created for those personnel who have completed a Level 1 course in Basic Radiation Safety and have the required experience to fulfil the employer’s requirements to become a Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS).
Course Objectives
Personnel certified in Advanced Radiation Safety will have demonstrated an understanding of radiation safety with a level of confidence to work safely and supervise other personnel who are working with, or associated with, radiation sources in compliance with local rules and governance.
Within certification, Level 2 personnel may be authorised and qualified by the employer to:
- Work with X-ray and gamma-ray sources
- Establish boundaries and barriers including signage
- Work within and record the radiation levels stated in relevant Governing Documents
- Determine the safety restrictions and risk assessments associated with its application
- Understand and comply with employer’s local rules and legislation
- Safety checks on equipment
- Work within inspection guidelines
- Record and document safety checks and boundary measurements
- Complete and endorse safety records
- Set up work plans for use by other personnel
- Understanding investigation procedures for dangerous occurrences
- Work closely with Radiation Protection Advisors (RPAs) and governing bodies such as Health and Safety Executive (HSE)
- Supervise all tasks carried out by personnel at Level 1 or Level 2
Course Content
This course is flexible and will be tailored to your company’s specific needs. Below is an overview of the standard course, which includes but is not limited to:
- The role of the RPA and RPS
- Emergency procedures
- Understanding radiation physics
- Looking at biological effects
- Radiation units and dose limitations
- Radiation protection, monitoring and calculations
- Radiographic equipment, calibration and function tests
- Radiation detection and measurement
- Radiation source storage/compound facilities
- Transportation requirements and legislation
- Company appointments and responsibilities
- Local rules and contingency plans
- Personal dosimetry
- Understanding procedures, normative documents and legislative, and the Radioactive Substances Act
- Ionising Radiation Regulations (current edition)

Course Information
Certification
- Attendance of training certificate
- SNT Level 2 or;
- PCN Level 2 certificate, issued by BINDT directly.
Duration
This course is only available at Level 2.
- Level 2 training and examination is 3 days.
The course duration is based on the full BINDT PCN course. SNT courses can be tailored to suit company requirements, please contact us to create your bespoke package.
Please note: Attendees will be assigned homework modules to complete in the evenings of each course day. These modules are included as part of the total training hours
Pre-Requisites
Candidates are required to have a valid BRS PCN Level 1 certification for more than 9 months and have 9 months Radiation Safety experience before attempting this NDT course.
We recommend that participants have some prior knowledge of the NDT method/sector, either through work experience, online research or by studying the course notes. Course notes cover all elements required for NDT examination. You may request collection of course notes after your booking is secure.
